It is a government university specializing in health sciences and is accredited by the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its various programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The academic programs at King Abdulaziz Medical City, affiliated with the Health Affairs of the Ministry of the National Guard, represented its first nucleus. With the rapid growth of these programs, and the positive results they have yielded in qualifying Saudi cadres in the specializations of medicine and health sciences, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz – may God have mercy on him – directed on the fifth of the month of Safar 1426 AH corresponding to the sixth of March 2005 AD to establish the university, and its name will be : “King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences”, with its main headquarters in Riyadh and two branches in Jeddah and Al-Ahsa.
